Park pictures by Rita Nolan

park deer

Fallow deer have been present in Phoenix Park since the seventeenth century when they were hunted for sport by the gentry of the day.

The present-day herd is descended from those deer who were chased for enjoyment and hunted for food.

There are four varieties of fallow deer in Phoenix Park: black, brown, common and menil. Deer moult and shed their coats in spring and autumn, so varieties in colour and shading are best seen in summer months, when the weather is more conducive to deer-spotting in any case.
