Ormonde coin sold for £77,625 at auction
-----------------------------

A gold coin issued by the man who began the Phoenix Park deer park sold for £77,625 (€114,000) at a Spink auction in London on February 22, 2006.

The coin was worth less than €1 when cast to pay 17th century Dublin-based soldiers to avoid troop defections at the time of the English civil war.

The Charles I pistole was authorised by James Butler, first Duke of Ormonde and Lord Lieutenant and Lieutenant-General of the king's forces in Ireland in 1646.

Gold was collected, melted down and turned into pledges by Sir John Veale and two Dublin goldsmiths, Peter Vandenhoven and Gilbert Tonques.
